Jessie Chen

Business Manager

Year I joined IP: 2020

What I bring to IP: As part of the Business Success team at Intentional Philanthropy, I bring over 15 years of experience in communications, media, customer service, and administration for both corporate companies and non-profit organizations in New York City, San Francisco, and the Greater D.C. area. At IP, I enjoy applying my knowledge of business practices to serve as the backbone of this dynamic and multifaceted company. I manage day-to-day operations and support foundation administration across several functions including vendor and project management, talent recruitment, business development, tech support, and bookkeeping. I work closely with senior leadership, keeping our operations running smoothly both virtually and on the ground, thus enabling client teams to achieve greater community impact through their work. I have an M.S. in Journalism from Boston University and a B.A. in Foreign Languages and Literature from National Sun Yat-Sen University in Taiwan.

What I love most about my work: I enjoy the diversity of the work that I do and the fact that there is no such thing as a “typical day.” It is exciting to take on the challenge of solving problems on the fly, keeping all the balls in the air, providing support for team members, and developing creative solutions  to maximize productivity throughout the firm. In so doing, I ensure that my client-facing teammates can focus on delivering the best possible services to the foundations we support and the communities they serve. It’s definitely a feel-good environment where my work has assisted, directly or indirectly, the betterment of the world, and I get a front row seat watching it all be done.

What I am most excited about learning right now: Having worked for a non-profit organization for four years prior to joining IP, I saw the impact just one single organization can make on the community. At IP, I’ve been expanding my knowledge and understanding of philanthropy on a larger scale and learning how a charitable foundation evolves to increase its impact through researched strategic giving that aligns with their ethics, interests, and convictions. As I continue to learn and grow at IP,  I’m eager to obtain a deeper grasp on leadership and strategic management skills to greater assist the firm’s efficiency and impact.

What I do in a typical week: I am the go-to person at IP for overseeing all the ins and outs of our daily operation, and I thrive on never having a “typical week” because it keeps things interesting while keeping me on my toes. I also take great pride in the level of trust my colleagues have given me and I strive to be the resident problem-solver on our team.

What I do when I’m not working: New experiences stimulate me, be it a new book, a new movie, a new art exhibit, a new recipe, a new restaurant, a new travel destination, a new physical activity ... the list goes on. When I’m not working, I can be found searching for and exploring the next new  activity or place, often with my little boy in tow.

What my coworkers say about me: Jessie is a reliable problem solver who always has a timely response to any team needs. She embodies efficiency and can keep diverse projects on track while remaining flexible to accommodate the ever-changing and growing demands from managing our business. In all of this, she brings a calm, friendly spirit to her work.
